AFE GLOBAL CLEAN WATER INITIATIVE

ree

In many of the places where we work, the people do not have access to clean drinking water.

Women and children spend many hours each day walking long distances to gather water. Water-borne diseases lead to a multitude of serious health problems, many life-threatening.

Through our I Thirst water program, we provide water filters and water tank systems that supply ongoing clean water to families and communities.  These solutions along with sanitation and health training result in an immediate, drastic improvement in health.

THE CRISIS:

780 million people do not have access to clean drinking water. That is equivalent to the entire population of the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, France, and Mexico…  combined.

Half of the hospital beds in the world are occupied by patients suffering from diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.

3.4 million People die each year from water related disease. This is the equivalent to the population of Los Angeles… every year.

Every 21 seconds a child dies from diarrhea.

200 million work hours are spent every day by women collecting water. This is time not spent working at an income-generating job, caring for family members, or attending school.

While the numbers can be overwhelming, the truth is that this is a completely solvable problem. Here at GCWI, we are committed to being part of the solution.

OUR SOLUTIONS:

The AFEGCWI water filter costs only £65 and provides continuous clean water for at least three families.  Along with our partners, we distribute these filters door to door and provide clean water and sanitation.

AFE GCWI comes with tangible gifts of love and with power.  As a direct result of water filter distribution, the church in Kogi state does not have enough room in its building for all the new believers.  Therefore, they are starting house churches and making disciples.

WATER TANKS

Using rain collection systems with filters on the end of the tanks, we can provide clean water for whole communities.  In areas where there is adequate rainfall, these 10,000 liter tanks are an immediate and lasting answer to their most pressing need.

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

The ultimate goal of all of our projects is community transformation and sustainability. We meet both the immediate needs of people for survival while simultaneously addressing the underlying causes of poverty

AFE  Global Water Initiative >

In the West Africa region AFE GCWI is led by GILPC.

Our work shall be direct its  focuses on water for agriculture and communities globally having water challenges in the communities and  around major river basins areas in Africa.

GCWI in West Africa empowers smallholders in large scale irrigation schemes, usually associated with large dams that are built as a strategic response to improve local and national food security.

The program addresses scheme economics and investment choices, smallholder productivity and innovation, and improved governance leading to a more equitable distribution of development benefits from water.

We aim to explore how smallholder farmers in existing large scale schemes can best be supported to sustainably improve agricultural practice and productivity when innovation is shared and adopted. We also seek to improve the governance systems around current and future dams so that all local water users share water and land equitably. We aim to stimulate dialogue and opportunities for exploiting opportunities for investment in diverse activities as well as for avoiding conflicts and fostering secure and sustainable livelihoods for pastoralists, farmers and fishermen.

Our overall vision puts smallholder farmers at the center of policies for efficient water management and secure and sustainable livelihoods.  This is because we believe that individual smallholder farmers with secure land tenure are the key to long term household and ultimately national, food security through conflict-free conservation, management and use of water resources.  By working with the most efficient and appropriate irrigation technologies and governance tools, empowered smallholders can contribute to improved food security for all.

Strategic Outcomes

The GCWI program seeks to improve food security and improve way of living in the affected communities by achieving four strategic outcomes:

Awareness:

Increased awareness and debate of the livelihood impacts and economic viability of large government led investment approaches to agriculture technology solutions directed at food security in a context of climate change.

Advocacy :

Increased understanding of and support to farmer-led innovation, knowledge and technologies for sustainable agricultural intensification in dam irrigated sites.

Better governance and policies for and around dam-fed irrigation systems that improve equitable use of water and reduce conflicts.

Capacity building :

Capacity and support for change is built through learning and effective communication.

Policy reforms :

Global and policy engagement is a critical component of our ethos.

We engage in global advocacy to strengthen regional programs and inform global level policy and planning processes.

Throughout the year, GCWI partners shall participate in global conferences and events, lead dialogues, and engage in targeted water research and advocacy activities and fundraising.

Our goal is to create meaningful change through integrated policy initiatives and advocacy to:

support more effective governance and policy-making at all levels in support of water for agriculture.

Enhancing the quality of knowledge and make accessible relevant information for smallholder farmers while improving use and management practices for key stakeholders.
